Why do we teach Geography?

• To develop a better understanding of our world and our place within space. 
• To equip our pupils with the knowledge and skills to become global citizens.
• To encourage an appreciation for our world and to show respect for their local, national and international environments. We want our children to ask questions and to think about ways to improve our world.
• For children to understand that the world goes beyond their border and that they are part of a global community. 
• We want to inspire a curiosity and fascination about the world as we teach about diverse places, people and natural and human environment.

What do we teach?

Through the four areas of Geography, the children will understand their place in the world:

Locational and Place knowledge: Children will gain a deeper understanding of their place in the world and its significance, and be able to compare and contrast to other significant locations.

Human geography: Children will understand the impact of humans on the earth in terms of land use, settlements and their direct connection to physical changes.

Physical geography: Children will understand how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.

Geographical skills and fieldwork: Children will become confident in collecting, analysing and communicating a range of data gathered through fieldwork that deepens their understanding of geographical processes. The teaching of Geography also promotes cross-curricular links, including with Maths and Science in particular.
