This is an outstanding school of which a parent, with some justification, wrote 'Michael Faraday is the best'. Pupils' personal development is outstanding and produces a real sense of community.

Around the school this week...

Nursery The children have been continuing their work with our friends from Shakespeare's Globe. Working alongside Kieran, we have been exploring the character of Ariel from The Tempest. We acted out a scene from the magical forest found in Shakespeare's play. Kieran read out a letter for the children written by Ariel. It asked how the Nursery children could help her in the magical forest. We encouraged the children to use various props they found within a secret chest to help make the forest friendlier. You can watch some of the ideas in action below.

Reception The children were incredibly excited ahead of their performance at the nearby Blue Elephant Theatre later in the week. We have been working with esteemed composer John Webb on our production of We're Going on a Bear Hunt. "I'm a monkey in the jungle," said Dani. "I've got some special brown clothes to wear!" "I'm not nervous about the play," Billy told us. "I enjoy singing!"

Year 1 We had a fantastic trip out to the Horniman Museum this week. The children were keen to learn more about sculptures, having researched statues and models in class. "A sculpture can be made out wood, stone, clay, glass, metal or ice," Kai told us. "Sculptures don't move. They are still." We are planning to make our own sculptures around Year 1 next week. We are also going to be writing some stories in literacy lessons, thinking about what it might be like if our sculptures came to life. You can hear more about the Year 1 trip to the Horniman Museum in the podcast below.

Year 2 Our literacy work this week has focussed on finishing our stories written about the rain forest. Using the characters of the toucan, the sloth, the cheetah and the howling monkey, we thought about how our animal friends might feel if their homes were taken away from them with the de-forestation of their environment. You can listen to a couple of our Year 2 children talking about their work in the podcast below.

Year 3 We welcomed into Year 3 this week Vivian from Southwark Council's Road Safety Unit. We held a class discussion about the safest way to cross the road in our local area, and what to look out for when we are playing around our home environment. "You need to look left, right and then all around," said Carol. The children then went out on a road safety walk around Walworth, putting into practise what we had learnt in the classroom. "We wore luminous bibs so that cars could see us," Hassan added. You can find out more about road safety in the podcast below.

Year 4 The children greatly impressed everyone who was fortunate to catch them singing around the City this week. We were performing as part of Keys to the City, a unique musical event that saw a number of public pianos left within the Square Mile for performers to use. The Michael Faraday children represented the school with great maturity, showcasing their musical talent at four different locations within the City. "People were stopping to listen," said Kamran. "Some were even dancing to our songs!" Year 4 have a second trip to the Square Mile as part of the Keys to the City project next week. You can sample some of our brilliant Year 4 singing in the podcast below.

Year 5 Our science topic of sound has continued this week. We returned from our trip to the Horniman Museum, inspired by the amazing collection of instruments from around the world that we were able to see. We decided to use our knowledge to design and build our very own musical instruments. The children talked about different types of ways that we can produce sound. These included blowing, strumming, hitting or shaking. Some of our designs combined more than one of these options! You can hear more about our music making talents in the podcast below.

Year 6 The rehearsals for the end of year school play are now in full flow. We have been learning our parts in the script, and practising the singing and dancing required for the performance. The Jungle Book is proving to be a popular choice of play. The production is starting to fall into place, with costumes and props also being worked upon this week. You can catch a short video of the Year 6 play rehearsals in the video below.
