Forest School and Sustainability

"The earth does not belong to us; we belong to the earth"

Forest School

We are very proud of our Forest School site situated in the main playground where the children are now able to learn and explore with our Forest School Leaders.

Why a Forest School?

Michael Faraday’s Forest School provides an opportunity for children to learn through play and exploration in the outdoors. Children have time and space to experience natural resources, materials and processes, supporting them to develop their understanding of the world around them. The experiences the children have at Forest School promote their confidence, independence, social and emotional wellbeing by allowing them to find out for themselves and take risks.

Our Forest School Principles

At Michael Faraday we follow the six Forest School Principles, as outlined by The Forest School Association:

  • FS is a long-term process of regular sessions, the cycle of planning, observation, adaptation and review links each session.
  • FS takes place in a woodland or natural environment to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.
  • FS uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for being, development and learning.
  • FS aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.
  • FS offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
  •  FS is run by qualified Forest School practitioners who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.
What is the impact?

Leave no trace

It is of the utmost importance that we promote respect for the natural world as an integral part of Forest School. The children will be involved and take on responsibility for checking and tidying the site. Ensuring we leave it as we found it.

 Sustainability (Eco Agenda)

We are very pleased that we have been successful in meeting the requirements for the Eco-School Green Flag.

Our Green Flag blog explains it all! Please click on the link. Green Flag!

Our Eco Warriors created the Eco Code:

To achieve the Green Flag status, our focus was on the following 3 aspects

  • Biodiversity
  • School Grounds
  • Litter

This year, we continue our efforts to make our school as green as possible, by focusing on:

  • Water
  • Electricity
  •  Waste
