Year 4
“I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeeded" (Michael Jordan)
Reading
We follow whole-class reading comprehension approach. Children answer questions on vocabulary (meaning of words), retrieval (finding information “on the line”), inference (“between the lines” – using clues to interpret), prediction (thinking “beyond the lines”) and summarising (VIP = very important points)
Please encourage regular reading at home – children are never too old to enjoy being read to.
Writing
Talk4Writing approach: We use high-quality model texts to explore the structure of narratives and the features of non-fiction. Children then apply the language, structure and writing techniques to create their own writing.
SPAG
We teach spelling through patterns and rhyme using our bespoke programme. Grammar and punctuation are taught both discretely and as part of writing lessons. Children are expected to use joined handwriting in all written work.
Maths
Children develop fluency and confidence in number and calculation through the Big Maths approach, while also applying their learning across wider maths, including shape, measurement, fractions and data. See website for more information.
