Phonics

In Reception, children learn letter sounds, including sounds made with two or three letters and use these to blend, read and spell increasingly complex words. In Year 1, children review their learning and then move on to Phase 5, where they learn that the same sound can be spelled in different ways, for example ai in rain, ay in play and a-e in make. Children in Year 1 take the statutory Phonics Screening Check in June. More information will be shared with parents closer to the time.

Reading (Little Wandle approach) 

Children take part in regular reading practice sessions to develop decoding, fluency and comprehension. Books are carefully matched to each child’s phonics knowledge.

Writing (Talk 4 Writing approach) 

Children learn stories through speaking, actions and repetition, helping them to build confidence and develop the language and ideas they need for their own writing. Children use their phonics skills and knowledge of common exception words to support accurate spelling. We explicitly teach correct letter formation - please reinforce the correct letter formation when supporting writing at home.

Maths (Big Maths approach)
