Design Technology (DT)

"You can't use up creativity.  The more you use, the more you have."

Maya Angelou

Why do we teach design?
  • To develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • To build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design, make and evaluate products, systems and solutions that address real-life challenges.
  • To understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook and be motivated to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
  • To nurture the children’s curiosity, resilience, and confidence in taking on design challenges and working collaboratively in teams.
  • To provide a curriculum that empowers our children to become creative thinkers, problem-solvers and innovators and who will apply their skills to make a positive contribution to the world around them.
What do we teach?

We follow the 'Kapow Primay' scheme of work from EYFS to year 6, which supports the pupils to meet the Development Matters (in EYFS) and to meet the National Curriculum end of key stage attainment targets.

How we structure the planning over the year:

Key Stage 1

Autumn Term Spring Term Summer Term
Cooking and Nutrition Textiles Mechanism
    Structures

Key Stage 2

Autumn Term Spring Term Summer Term
Cooking and Nutrition Textiles Mechanical systems
Digital World Electrical Systems Structure
