Learning music has wide-reaching benefits for children, providing them with the tools to think creatively, innovate and appreciate diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Our aim at Michael Faraday is to nurture cooperative, confident and motivated students through their exposure to and experience of Music. We also want to build a true connection to the world through learning new skills, cultivating self-expression and experiencing a sense of purpose and enjoyment.

Why do we teach Music?

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity – it is a key part of our lives and therefore we recognise its value at Michael Faraday. We believe it offers children something that is emotional, imaginative and fun.

We also teach music to:

• Develop creativity: It builds imagination and self-confidence.
• Improve academics: Music helps the body and the mind work together. Research has shown that it develops areas of the brain that pertain to language and reasoning. Learning songs can improve children’s memory skills.
• Develop children socially, culturally and spiritually: Music teaches children a variety of cultures and helps people to connect. Children are naturally very social, and it's important to encourage them to build relationships by providing them experiences to share with each other.

Music has high status at Michael Faraday.  We have chosen to invest in specialist teachers from Southwark Music Service to teach instruments across all year groups in Key Stage 2 so that our students receive the best possible teaching of this subject.  In EYFS and Key Stage 1, the children are taught music by our experienced staff to ensure they experience the interrelated processes of exploring sounds, performing, composing, improvising and singing.

What do we teach?

We ensure that our children develop an appreciation for music from a wide range of cultures, contexts and from different times. Along with voice, our children learn to play and explore both tuned and non-tuned instruments including body percussion, ukulele, descant recorder, treble recorder, samba drumming and brass band instruments.

In school, the teachers use the Charanga scheme of work when teaching music to their classes.

In December, we host a Winter Concert.  At the concert, all the children have the opportunity to perform songs and dances in front of an audience.  In Spring Term we host a performance to showcase the children's ability to play their musical instruments.
